Giant robots don’t walk

It occurred to me the basic design of gunpla (otherwise known as gundam) hasn’t really changed in the last 30 years. The masked face, twin horns and standard design of the RX-78 has seen numerous incarnations and re-imagination.

Bandai has taken this immortal robot and built an empire. I built this back in May 2016 as a display piece for the Australian Model Expo in Sandown, as part of Metro Hobbies big display. The RE 1/100 RX-78 GP-04G Gerbera has been a popular subject, and we are seeing yet more interesting RE releases in the last few months.

The plausibility¬†of giant robots duking it out in future wars might come to happen one day. If not for the logic of being able to step on things aside, the fact that someone today thought of it means that someone in the future might think its really logical. The Gerbera’s tri-wings are actually rocket maneuvering boosters – which makes total sense if you’re in zero-G combat.

Personally, I think it just looks good.

In future posts, I will begin to experiment in crossing over different finishing techniques to Gunpla, and hopefully we will see some interesting results. But for the meantime, enjoy this showcase of what may be one of many great looking REs.
